Find an Adoptable Animal In Your Area by zip code...

Petfinder is an on-line, searchable database of animals that need homes. It is also a directory of over 9,000 animal shelters and adoption organizations across the USA, Canada and Mexico. Organizations maintain their own home pages and available pet database.

Our mission: to use Internet technology and the resources it can generate to 1) increase public awareness of the availability of high-quality adoptable pets and to 2) increase the overall effectiveness of pet adoption programs across North America to the extent that the euthanasia of adoptable pets is eliminated.

From the comfort of their personal computers, pet lovers can search for a pet that best matches their needs. They can then reference a shelter's Web page and discover what services it offer. Petfinder also includes classified ads, discussion forums and a library of animal welfare articles. Petfinder is updated DAILY.

Organizations wishing to participate should register. A contact person should be responsible for direct communications with Petfinder. Only nonprofit organizations will be included (but Federal 501(c)(3) status is not necessary).

Petfinder is made up of animal-care professionals and regular people volunteering for their local animal welfare organizations all working together to maintain active and accurate homeless pet lists. Most animal welfare volunteers have "real jobs" by day. The success and the magnitude of this project is largely due to their tireless efforts to make a difference.

               Adopt A
                  Dog Or Cat

Did you know that 10 million adoptable                                                 dogs & cats are killed each year due mainly to
overpopulation?  Did you know that 25-30% of
dogs for adoption in animal shelters are
purebred?  The other 70-75% are lovable,
                                     wonderful mixed-breed companions, just waiting
for a chance to be your perfect new friend.

In an effort to help people make good choices when they adopt a dog or cat, many humane societies, SPCAs and pet rescues provide adoption counseling to help match you with a companion animal for adoption.

If you have your heart set on a specific breed, before you check out a breeder or pet store, why not adopt an animal from a breed rescue organization?  Breed rescues are groups that specialize in a particular breed of dog or cat.

Don't be fooled into thinking that animal shelters and rescues are filled with dogs or cats that were discarded because they're "bad".  Shelter animals for adoption are wonderful companions who became the victims of family tragedy, unlucky circumstances or irresponsible humans.

Did you know that many backyard dog breeders and pet stores who supply the majority of purebreds simply are selling inbred animals without care for preventing genetic problems?  Mixed breed dogs and cats have less inbreeding, generally less inherited genetic disease, and therefore overall lower vet bills and are happier companions!  The best place to find a mixed breed dog or cat is at an SPCA, a humane society or an animal shelter.
